Michael Graves Design™ Fondue Set Review

I recieved this as a wedding gift several years ago, and had not attempted to use this item since then. Upon opening the box the week prior to New Year's I discovered there were no instructions. Having zero fondue experience I wanted to obtain these. I assumed that I would be able to locate them on the web, but couldn't. Per other users suggestions, I emailed a representative at Michael Graves to assist me. They did send the directions via email, however it was after New Year's and I was forced to purchase a set with instructions for the party. I will post a following of the instructions that Michael Graves sent me:

1) Place fondue set on a heat-resistant, level tabletop or other sturdy, flat surface.
2) Place canned fuel in stand before lighting in center with a match.
3) For best results, prepare the fondue in the fondue pot on the stove top on low heat, then carefully transfer pot to the stand with the burner lit.
4) Make sure pot fits securely on the stand.
5) When completely cool, remove the fondue pot from the stand.
6) Remove all contents from pot and rinse.
7) Wash pot and splash guard by hand, using warm, soapy water.
8) Fondue forks are dishwasher safe.
9) Wipe cooled stand with a damp cloth, or wash in hot, soapy water if needed and dry thoroughly.
!! CAUTION: !!
This fondue set is designer to use canned cooking fuel, as a heat source. Do not use liquid fuel. Use pot holders to transfer hot fondue pot to lit burner. Make sure the canned heat isn't too high before transferring pot. Keep fondue set out of the reach of children and always store burner in a childe safe place. Never eat directly off of the fondue fork. Always use your fondue set in a well-ventilated area.

In addition, the Michael Graves fondue set was designed to use a canned fuel burner, "canned heat", one of the most well known brands is "Sterno". This canned fuel should be readily available at your local hardware, camping, or catering supply store. The proper size is the 2 hour, 2.6 OZ., (about 2 inches in diameter with a green label) can. If making a cheese or chocolate fondue use 1-2 tea light candles. This lower amount of heat will keep your ingredients from scorching.

Hopefully this will help the next person with this dilemma.

High on style, low on function. - Timothy D. Lagerborg - Littleton, CO. USA
I love fondue parties and own multiple fondue pots. The biggest fault with the Graves set is the abscence of a burner set. I like using the Graves set because it looks so nice and I like the revolving serving dishes(although small). When I use it though I actually use a burner cover from another set. You can not just use an open can of Sterno or the like because you can not modulate the heat. Even with the proper heat I usually reserve this set for broth or oil fondues as cheese or chocolate are hard to clean. I would only reccomend cheese or chocolate to a fondue pot that is a double boiler. Williams & Sonoma has a great set. Even with moderated heat, hot spots are hard to avoid on the Graves set burning cheese or chocolate. If you take these things into consideration and can get other fondue accesories I would not hesitiate buying this set as it is very stylish.

why ooohh why ? - Shanna Brown - El Paso Texas
My biggest problem with this so far was getting it out of the box. All of the parts were in little bags but vacuum sealed together as one unit. I had to tear and shread all the plastic to pieces before I could get the parts seperated. I even tried to pry them apart with a screw driver before spending 20 minutes tearing the plastic into pieces. As most others, it gives no directions, specifically with heating. I see now that you can contact Wilton to get instructions, but why do I as the consumer have to jump through hoops to get something that is pretty standard when you purchase anything. I mainly wanted it for the look and design which I am happy with.

Pretty, but a pain - -
Aside from the other reviewers' complaints about the lack of recipes or instructions, having used this with a standard sterno can or tea-candle, I can attest that the little incredient cups are a bit too small, and trying to clean the pot (especially after using cheese) is extremely difficult. We quite literally cut our wrists tryint to scrub the interior out. The top opening is sharp with little notches, so you really have to watch out with your sponge and bare wrists. We're not sure if we'll ever use this again- and most certainly would not recommend it unless it's on sale.

Poor quality! Not stainless as promised - Christian Wilhelm Fischer -
Very poor quality, it started to rust after the first usage. Well, we are glad it started so early, so we could return it to Amazon. You better spend more money to get a fondue set you can actually use not only once.

Disappointed - Little Woman - Salt Lake City, UT USA
I'm no fondue expert, but I bought two different fondue sets and the other is better by far and for about the same price. This burned the cheese and I couldn't keep the fuel lit. It kept going out and it was impossible to control the temperature. It also left burn stains on the bottom of the pot. You're better off with something else!

Kalorik CHM-16314 Stainless-Steel 2-Tier 2-1/2-Quart Chocolate Fountain Review

I bought this for my daughters 18th birthday, she wanted a chocolate fountain and stuff to dip in it instead of birthday cake. I was worried that something may go wrong and I might have difficulty with it, but it went off without a hitch. The instructions were great. The most important thing is to make sure that the fountain is level to get a good chocolate flow, it has leveling legs on it which make it easy. The motor is not quiet, but not loud enough to put people off. The party went well and everyone loved the fountain. I plan on using it again the next event that comes up, though I don't know if it will be for chocolate. The instructions say you can use syrup, caramel, barbecue sauce to dip wings, nacho cheese, and give some recipes for other things that can be used in the fountain. So I think I would love to give one of those a try. I looked at some other brands before buying this one, the super cheap ones had bad reviews and then there were the super expensive. This brand seemed to be in the middle price range and for the height 16in had a good price and good reviews. I am happy with my purchase.

It's ok for the price. - Takahito Nakamura -
We got this one as a replacement. It could be built better as the bottom part of fountain that attaches to the base is little shaky and cause the fountain to shake which prevents smooth flow of chocolate. But it is okay for the price.

Sierra 11-Piece Meat Fondue Set, Blue Enameled Pot Review

The quality of this enameled cast iron fondue (pot) seems great. Enamel is evenly distributed, the blue colored exterior is quite nice and the overall impression is favorable. In fact, everything seems to be quite nice with two exceptions one notices upon closer inspection:

1. The rechaud (stand) just doesn't seem to fit quite perfectly with the pot: the pot moves on it back and forth and it looks like it might even fall. I don't think that would actually happen since the rechaud does have a large enough level surface ring at the bottom (invisible on the photo), but your pot will likely end up resting in an angle that makes one think "I wonder if this is safe". It is unfortunate that the manufacturer clearly didn't try the pot and the rechaud together as they would surely have noticed this fault immediately.

2. Forks & gel burner. They are functional, but by no means anything special. However, the forks in this set are no worse than the forks in any other fondue set you can find. Fact of the matter is that if you wish to have nice fondue forks, you will need to buy them separately. Same comment about the quality applies to the gel burner.

In case the product description doesn't mention it: there is no fuel (gel or liquid) in the package. You will need to purchase the fuel separately.

Sierra 11-Piece Meat Fondue Set, Blue Enameled Pot Specifications

Having graduated well beyond the 1960s culinary craze, fondue cooking remains a creative way to gather friends at the table for a deliciously entertaining experience. Swissmar's Sierra 11-piece meat fondue set specializes in heating oil or broth to an even, consistent temperature for dipping bite-sized dinner treats such as beef, chicken, seafood, or pork. Crafted of enameled cast iron, the wide, straight-sided pot holds a generous 1.6 quarts of liquid and can be preheated on a stovetop or warmed directly over the fondue flame. Cast iron is an ideal choice for meat cooking, as it works well at both low and high temperatures and, though it takes a few minutes to heat up, provides excellent heat distribution and retention. The matching rechaud stands on three sturdy legs with high arches between to easily access the paste/gel fuel burner. Below, a handsome light wood base is carved with a groove to securely hold the entire fondue set while protecting tabletops from heat and drips.

When the liquid inside is bubbling nicely, it's time to dig in. For safe, cool handling, there are two wide handles as well as a removable splatter guard that fits snugly on the pot with slots for the six forks. Diners choose a color on the tip of each fork so it's easy to identify and store even when there's much dipping and stirring (not to mention talking and laughing!). For multipurpose usage, simply remove the splatter guard and lower the heat to melt cheese, or use the pot as a warmer for appetizers, buffet items, chili, or soup. Available in an array of bright colors including red, blue, white, and orange, this fondue set has a cheerful presence that suits its inviting, communal purpose. Assembled, the set measures 8-1/4 inches high by 8 inches in diameter, and wide handles assist in transporting the 6-3/4-inch pot. Easy recipes are included to get the party started. --Kara Karll

Trudeau Lazy Susan Fondue Set Review

I hadn't done fondue since I was a kid, and this easy, pretty set brought back the memories! It's well constructed, the "lazy susan" aspect is really convenient and it's pretty! The cheese scorched a little on the bottom, but if I add some olive oil first it stopped doing that. I would recommend this, especially as a first time set.

Good value for money - R. Deo - Seattle, WA, USA
This is a good set that meets our needs. The lazy susan is a nice feature, and the stand is a good safety feature. Little bulky to store, but is perfect for a family of 4.

Has some good points, and some bad points - Laura I - Fairchild AFB, WA
I've been meaning to get a new fondue pot for awhile. this one happened to be part of Amazon's "4 for 3" kitchen deal they were holding, so I got it.

I like that the fondue pot and dipping trays are glazed stoneware. When I first saw the picture online, I assumed that it was plastic and when I read in the description that it was stoneware I was pretty happy about that. I don't remember if it says so or not, but I think it's definitely dishwasher safe, at least it is with my dishwasher (sans metal parts).

The metal frame comes in a couple of pieces that you have to assemble by simply fitting it together, no tools required. Unfortunately, the metal frame holding the spinning trays is actually two pieces, and this is a bit of a problem for me. It tends to wobble and be off centered, and God help you if you don't fill up all 4 trays with an even weight of food (or if someone eats from one tray faster then the others) because then it's really off center!

Also, when I first used it, I filled up the fondue pot and trays in the kitchen, with the intention of then carrying it to the table. Well.. my problem was, "how do you pick it up?" As I mentioned before, it's not very stable. It can be moved, but it's a bit cumbersome. It would probably benefit from some sort of handle. Finally, the product description mentions a "recipe booklet". This so called recipe booklet is safety instructions on using gel-fuel and then a single recipe for traditional fondue. Of course you can find plenty of recipes all over the internet, but I found it to be a bit misleading that it says, "recipe booklet".

That said, I do like the fondue set, but there are most definitely better ones out there for a similar price.
